Support Patient Room Communication
BrightSign, Bluefin, & Thorvin Support Patient Room Communications in Hospital
Overview
A major Toronto hospital needed to refresh hundreds of patient room displays that reached the end of their lifecycle. Working with Capital Networks, Thorvin Electronics, and Bluefin, the hospital deployed Bluefin displays with BrightSign Built-In to support real-time communication between its electronic medical record system, caregivers, and visitors at every patient room entrance.
The Challenge
In healthcare, communication is part of the care environment. Screens outside patient rooms must stay online, reflect the latest patient and safety information, and operate without disruption to clinical workflows. Aging hardware and manual servicing create risk, increase downtime, and place additional strain on IT and facilities teams.
The hospital needed a platform that could integrate with electronic medical record (EMR) driven content while remaining secure, stable, and centrally managed across hundreds of rooms.
The Solution
Thorvin Electronics and Bluefin worked closely with Capital Networks to deliver custom-sized patient room displays using BrightSign Built-In. By embedding BrightSign directly inside each Bluefin display, the hospital gained an all-in-one, fully managed signage platform designed for long term reliability in clinical environments.
BrightSignOS™ provides the operating system and management layer behind every screen, enabling centralized monitoring, remote updates, and long-term platform stability. This ensures patient precautionary and safety information remains visible and accurate at all times while reducing the operational burden on hospital IT teams.
Key Installations
- 690 Bluefin patient room displays with BrightSign Built-In
- Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) connectivity to support clean, low-touch installation
- Screens mounted outside patient rooms for point of entry visibility
The Benefits
Bluefin’s custom display design allowed the hospital to modernize its rooms without structural changes, while Thorvin ensured the solution was delivered and deployed to meet healthcare compliance and lifecycle requirements. BrightSign Built-In and BrightSignOS provide the secure, reliable foundation that keeps these screens online and centrally managed across the hospital.
Together, this approach improves clinical communication, reduces onsite service needs, and supports a more efficient care environment where staff and visitors have the information they need at the right moment.
“When staff tell us they will not open a room unless the display is up and running, it speaks volumes about the trust they have placed in this technology.”
Jim Vair, President, Capital Networks Limited
Looking Forward
With Bluefin, Thorvin, and BrightSign delivering a proven patient room platform, the hospital is positioned to expand into additional healthcare signage applications using the same BrightSignOS foundation across future phases of the project.
